Storage in a small space is always a challenge. In a studio apartment it is especially important to have affordable and good looking storage. Chances are in such a small space your storage options are going to be highly visible to your guests. Here 5 affordable storage options in a small space.
1. Storage Ottomans
Storage ottomans are perfect for a small place because they can serve double duty. Every piece of furniture should serve more than one function in a studio apartments. Storage ottomans can work as a night stand, coffee table, extra seating, and even simply accent furniture.
You can find great ottomans to solve your storage solutions almost anywhere. Target, Wal-Mart, Ikea, Pier One, and even Bed bath and Beyond all sell a variety of storage ottomans.
You can even make your own storage ottoman simply by creating a cube out of MDF or ply wood. Leave one side open so you can access the inside. Sew a simple cube slip cover and slide it over the box. If you don’t like to sew then paint your storage ottoman.
2. Storage Beds
I recently came across some great beds with tons of storage drawers underneath in the Pottery Barn catalogue. Now, they are very expensive, but you can get the same amount of storage for a lot less if you try. Use pre made under the bed storage baskets to hold all of your stuff. These are a great option for anyone with a bed that does not have a dust ruffle. If your bed is covered to the floor invest in simple and affordable plastic bins that easily slide under the bed.
3. Hang Stuff on The Wall
This is the most simple and efficient way to store stuff in a small space like a studio apartment. Everyday objects can take on new meaning when displayed on the wall. Install some simple hooks and you are set. Here are some fun ideas for using hooks to display your everyday items as art in your small space:
Hang bike hooks over the couch. Hang your bike up when it is not in use and you have free art!
A row of simple hooks attached to the kitchen wall makes a sleek and compact pot rack. If you have fabulous pots and pans this is a great way to display them. Utensils also look great displayed this way.
4. Stacking Decorative Boxes or Baskets
Use up some vertical space to add storage to your small studio apartments. Don’t limit yourself to one cute basket or trunk at the end of the bed. Make sure you buy some sturdy baskets or boxes with lids. Stack them up three deep. You have tripled your storage and created a fun focal point into the room. Old wooden and leather trunks work well like this as well. Stacked baskets also work well as a night table. Stack them to the appropriate height and top them off with a piece of clear beveled glass.
5. Curtains
Curtains are fabulous way to hide an entire storage wall. Install a curtain track at the top of your ceiling, the kind meant to hold drapery. It should be bout 16 inches out from the wall. Use that hidden space to install shelving, hooks, and clothing racks. You can make any space into a visually appealing closet this way! To save money use colorful sheets as the curtains. If you are really tight on money you could use push pins or upholstery tacks to install you curtains to the ceiling. Just make sure you use loots of small panels so you can open these curtains whenever you need t get to something.
